"Always Paper..."
My name is Laura Brufani, and my city is Rome. It is here that I received my training at the Koefia International Academy of Fashion and Costume, where I learned the technique of Moulage, the three-dimensional working of paper and fabric on a mannequin, a technique I have been teaching at the same Institute for over thirty years.
My thinking is about "structure" beyond Fashion, driven by a deep passion for architecture and design that significantly influences my professional journey. Key figures for me include the masters Roberto Capucci, Zaha Hadid, and Tadao Ando. I define myself as a "Moulage Performer," always fascinated by the potential of paper that molds into unexpected shapes and volumes through the movement of hands, always mindful of the paper's fragility. Sometimes I rely on a sketch, but more often, I follow a creative instinct that leads me to improvise a cut, a line, a volume.
This daily practice introduces me to other spaces, driven by the need to experiment, to challenge myself. This need led to my participation in the Fashion section of the 2024 Biennale "Cartasia," my first experience in an artistic contest where I present a project of sculptural dresses made from handmade paper, technically "reproducible."
As a professional, I cannot disregard this concept of structure and wearability, a mastery learned over time, in considering and respecting the volume of the human body, functionality, harmony, and the aesthetic sense of what covers it. I seek the uniqueness of each piece, not as a mere exhibition value, but as an expression of my emotional layers. These layers, depending on a given event, can reshape beliefs and indicate different approaches, a thought that belongs to me as a consequence of reflection on future projects.
The theme of the 2024 Biennale "Here and Now: Tomorrow" allows for expressing a relative concept of the present and the future, a personal viewpoint of events, variables, correlations, unforeseen circumstances, and transformations. Being in motion to express the change over time, through one's idea of art.
The works of artists presented in all Sections of the Biennale are remarkable, offering a visual education that generates curiosity, ideas, and stimulation. Every time this simple material, paper, meets hands in a creative process, I like to think it evokes awe and emotion in the observer.
Inspiring, involving, and stimulating critical thinking, creating a space for dialogue that is feasible in modern society, especially after the rise of social media, through which everything is accessible to everyone... a network of connections, cultural horizons, and contaminations.
